What is Actos?
Actos is an orally active antidiabetic medication that contains Pioglitazone as main ingredient.
It is a drug of the thiazolidinedione class with hypoglycemic activity. The drug reduces the amount of glucose in blood, helping to restore the body’s proper response to insulin and keep blood sugar under control.
The drug also prevents the development of long-term diabetes-related problems, such as diabetic nephropathy and heart disease. It is available as tablets with various strengths of the active ingredient.
When is Actos prescribed?
Actos is prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults.
The medication can be administered alone or concomitantly with insulin, metformin or sulfonylurea.
It exerts its antihyperglycemic action only in the presence of endogenous insulin, therefore it is not effective for diabetic ketoacidosis or type 1 diabetes. The drug is often prescribed as an adjunct to proper diet and exercise to improve glycemic control. The drug has been also used experimentally to treat non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.
How to take Actos?
Actos should be taken once daily without regard to meals. The dosage recommendations for those who are beginning treatment with this drug for the first time start at 15-30 mg once daily. People with congestive heart failure should start at 15 mg. If necessary the dosage can be up-titrated to 45 mg once daily. The full therapeutic benefit is achieved in 2-3 months after the initiation of treatment. It is important to take the dose at one and the same time each day to maintain an even level of plasma drug concentration.

What are Actos side effects?
Actos may cause headaches, muscle aches, upper respiratory tract infections, sinusitis, sore throat, tooth disorders and hypoglycemia. After initiation of treatment, especially when combined with insulin, careful monitoring for fluid retention and peripheral edema is required as these side effects may precipitate congestive heart failure. Immediately report to your doctor if you develop any signs of liver damage, such as dark urine, yellowing of skin or eyes, nausea or vomiting.
When is Actos contraindicated?
Actos is contraindicated to patients with heart failure and acute liver diseases. It shouldn’t be administered to people with a known hypersensitivity to Pioglitazone or other thiazolidinediones. It is not indicated for use in pregnant, lactating women and patients under 18.
